Social enterprise and non-profit housing

man painting wallThere is no broadly agreed upon definition of social enterprise, though most definitions share two common elements.  In most cases, a social enterprise is:

  • initiated and/or operated by a non-profit or community-based organization alone or in partnership with a for-profit company
  • generates revenue which is used to support the environmental and/or social goals or mission of the organization

Many ONPHA members have developed an interest in social enterprises. They have the potential to generate revenue and provide tenants with opportunities to develop new skills and make an income. Social enterprises can be tools for creating change in organizations and communities.
