Module 1: The development process

This module provides an introduction to the overall development process, the stages of development and how to move through these stages. It also includes content on how to develop your project vision.

Module 2: Determining housing need and demand

This module explores how to determine housing need, and expands on recognizing supply issues, market trends and housing gaps in your local area. It also provides suggestions on how to develop a formal needs and demand study.

Module 3: Building support

This module discusses the concept of building support, from identifying and addressing opposition to tools for gaining community acceptance. You will learn strategies for mobilizing resources and effective communication.

Module 4: Defining the project concept

This module explores how to translate your housing ideas into a workable project concept and discusses preliminary design factors to be considered.

Module 5: The development team

This module teaches you how to create and manage your development team, the roles and responsibilities of each member, and provides effective tools for decision making.

Module 6: Advancing the concept

This module discusses the process of site selection and acquisition as well as project procurement techniques. You will also learn development approval requirements, project scheduling, project design strategies, and the importance of energy efficient features.

Module 7: Financial feasibility

This module discusses basic financial components and key elements of project capital and operating budgets. You will learn about the role of financing and the critical importance of feasibility testing.

Module 8: Funding and partnerships

This module describes how leveraging of assets and effective partnerships can help to advance your project. You will also learn prospective opportunities for funding and partnerships, and how best to solicit support for these.

 

Module 9: Building the project

This module discusses the process for building your project, from pre-construction approvals through actual construction. You will also learn about the challenges of construction administration and pre-occupancy planning.

Module 10: Getting operational

This module describes the process of moving from construction to operations. Topics include tenant move-in planning, construction wrap-up, and necessary closeout activities for your project.

Module 11: Preparing a development plan outline

This module discusses the process of developing a project plan. Using a defined template, course participants will develop and submit their own project plan for evaluation.
