The inspiring story of Trevaun Douglas
Ontario’s community housing sector thrives on the energy and vision of its young leaders, and Trevaun Douglas is a shining example of what this new generation can achieve. As a Program Coordinator for the Community Economic Development Team at Toronto Community Housing Corporation (TCHC), he’s proving that age is no barrier to making a meaningful impact.
Trevaun’s story is not just about personal success it’s about giving back to the community that raised him.
A deep-rooted passion for change
Trevaun’s journey into community service started long before his professional career. Growing up in Lawrence Heights, he witnessed the challenges faced by at-risk youth and was driven to be part of the solution. From volunteering as a landscaper at age 11 to becoming a Youth Animator at 12, Trevaun’s early actions demonstrated a deep-rooted passion for change.
As Trevaun reflects, “When I was younger, I had mentors. People cared about me. Now, it’s my turn… I want to show them that while it’s easy to take the wrong path and be a statistic, there’s also time to wake up and do things the right way.” His story is proof that with determination and compassion, one person can make a significant difference.
In 2019, Trevaun took the first step towards a professional career with TCHC, interning as a Tenant Service Coordinator. By 2021, while working as a Cleaner and Maintenance Worker for TCHC, Trevaun remained committed to local community initiatives. For him, his work is more than a job, it’s a calling.
Uplifting the community through action
Trevaun’s philosophy is simple: “I’m always looking to make someone’s life better.” From organizing spa days for mothers, delivering holiday groceries to families, or creating safe spaces for youth, Trevaun’s actions speak volumes.
“Whether it’s being around for conversations or just showing that I care for others, I can help change their trajectory in life” he said.
Some of his most notable achievements include:
- Mind on Strength: In response to the gun violence in Lawrence Heights, Trevaun launched Mind on Strength. A grassroots organization focused on promoting health and wellness among marginalized youth through sports and mental health workshops.
- Fundraising marathons: Trevaun organized a 24-kilometer walk from the CN Tower to Yorkdale Mall and back, raising funds for his community. In 2024, he went further by walking 100,000 steps from Yorkdale Mall to Hamilton, wearing a 55-pound weighted vest. The funds he raised provided 10 mothers in the community with a spa day for Mother’s Day
- Youth Mentorship: Through programs like his Friday evening basketball training, Trevaun mentors youth to help them build confidence, develop life skills, and see their full potential.

A role model for the next generation
Trevaun’s efforts have been widely recognized. He received the 2024 ONPHA Young Changemaker Award, was featured in Toronto Life magazine, and earned accolades from the Coaches Association of Ontario. He even spoke with former U.S. President Barack Obama about his community work.
But for Trevaun, the true measure of success is the impact he’s having on the youth of Lawrence Heights. “I’m extremely grateful to have a mentor like Trey,” says Victoria Chinedu, Community Economic Development Worker at TCHC. “He is an example for youth like myself, inspiring us to chase our dreams and work hard towards our goals.”
Trevaun’s leadership is creating a ripple effect throughout his community. He is inspiring future generations to believe in themselves and in their ability to create change.
A legacy of empowerment
Trevaun Douglas represents the very best of community leadership, a young changemaker who sees potential where others might see challenges. His journey reminds us that true community transformation starts with individuals who take action. Even the smallest acts of kindness can have a profound impact on others.
“Real change doesn’t happen overnight,” Trevaun reminds us. “It takes dedication, perseverance, and the courage to dream beyond your circumstances. Every small action you take can create ripples that impact lives for generations. Never underestimate the power you have to make a difference.”
